Mourning Monday

And it’s Monday again.

How did you fare this weekend?

In a random aside, I found an article Pokeybun would agree with (but look at the url, it is making me laugh).

Yes, funny URL. I don’t know if I’d be as strict as the person who wrote that article. Certainly I would for those jobs which require writing skills and more and more jobs these days do require writing skills as the days of the typing pool and everyone having a personal assistant or secretary are gone. Even those managers and executives who do have personal assistants use them more to manage their diaries rather than to type up documents.

I am frequently appalled at some of the documents that are produced for external consumption in the place I work, some of them for very senior audiences. The simple spelling and grammar errors in these documents make me cringe and no amount of me pleading to be able to proof-read them before they’re submitted or released has any effect. My bosses simply don’t see that there is a problem.

As for the weekend, Swans won, yay! I have a cold, boo.

I don’t know if he is taking it too far in testing everyone but if it works for him then I guess it is his choice. Personally I refuse to even consider dating people who have no good reason for their inability to spell and use at least half decent grammar.

My weekend involved watching Stargate with a friend, buying a few new maxi dresses and some irresponsible sun baking in the gorgeous Finnish sunshine. It has been mostly rainy recently, so it was fantastic to sit outside for a couple of hours. My friend and I also got asked if we were lesbian because apparently the occasional arm around each other or touching each others shoulders and arms with our hands is erotic… Not really sure how the person who thought that came to that conclusion.

When you have a problem making out what someone means from the incredibly awful spelling/grammar, it really is a bit much. I agree.

I once went on a date with a guy who sent me a text after saying ‘Thanks for the date sweaty’ – I was so upset, thinking that I must have stank the date out or something only to get a text the next day saying ‘Hey Sweaty, Hpe u hve a gr8 day! Love *channing tatum look-a-like*’

He may have been pretty but they guy was mistaking sweaty for sweetie. Date 2 never happened!

I think I could look past that for looks. Deep, deep down, I am pretty shallow.

Because – you can teach someone grammar, but you can’t teach them hotness.

Remind me to tell you about the very pretty bouncer I once dated, and how I took him to a party and asked him to be silent and smouldery, lest people realise he was dumb as a box of hair…

I finished work at 7 pm Saturday. By my reckoning that means I started my holidays at 7 pm Saturday -sick as a dog. Don’t even know how I drove home my head was so fuddled. I did the manager’s report before I left as it falls due tomorrow. I’m sure it will make interesting reading when I get it back with all the bosses’ comments. They weren’t real happy with the last one and I was actually functioning fairly well that time.

Anyway, my holidays started with a whimper (literally). Still, on the bright side, it hasn’t destroyed my plan to lay around and do nothing.

I agree with the article as well. Given what his company produces, it is of the utmost importance to him.

What does appal me is the cavalier approach to grammar in the company I work for. It mirrors Pokey’s experience. Memos sent company-wide by top management are littered with spelling errors and grammatical mistakes. There are cases where I only ‘know’ what they want done becasue of the normal requirements in such circumstances. I have stopped calling them to ask for clarification when in doubt; it seems I don’t understand ‘plain English’.

    Gah!

I think the ‘grammar stickler’ has a point – I wouldn’t take it that far perhaps, but it is vital for his business, and it is his business so his call. Now that I’m in a position to influence some of the written communication coming out of this office there are a lot of changes and still a lot more required… can’t be too pushy too soon, but I keep making the point of how it reflects on our professionalism.

Weekend was quiet, mostly at home, sorting out my desk, doing chores and pottering around, as Mr R was working on a report for work most of the weekend. Hopefully once the report is finished and deadline met, they will allow a couple of days off in lieu. We did go to the out-law’s for dinner on Saturday night, which was a quiet, pleasant evening. But the big highlight of the weekend for me is my new bling! We started looking for an eternity ring before our 10th wedding anniversary, but couldn’t find what we wanted, and with other things popping up, stopped looking. Occasionally we would have a look in jewellers as we passed, but not seriously shopping around, and still no success. On Friday we stopped in one jeweller’s as they were having a closing down sale, and were told that what we wanted would have to be made for us. Did some other shopping, decided to have a quick look in the other jewellery shop opposite the first, and we found it! It is a 5 diamond ring that curves around my engagement solitaire ring – sounds simple but it was getting the right curve so the rings’ settings didn’t rub against each other. We both love it. So it is for our 10th wedding anniversary, 18 months ago!

I had a post planned on this topic (well, a slight tangent to it anyway). I’m sick and my head is spinning and I don’t think you’ll get a post from me this week so I guess I should just throw the basic idea in here and see what you make of it.

As Smoph says, the Mummy Wars are on. Opinions are wildly variant and firmly held. Demonisation of ‘non-believers’ is rife and at times vicious.

I have three daughters, all of whom have taken quite different approaches to bringing up the five grandsons involved, especially in relation to discipline and protection. Two of them are quite critical of each other (to us, not yet openly to each other) and the third just shrugs her shoulders and gets on with things. I wouldn’t say any of them are wrong, although I do see some problems with some of their approaches. I am of the opinion that the children will survive regardless.

Now, here’s the thing: every one of those kids knows he is loved and cherished. Every one of them is comfortable going to his parents, even if he has screwed up in some way. Each one of them runs to the door to greet his parents when they come home from work (rather than feeling it necessary to bolt out the back door as I did) and is thrilled to see them.

That, surely, is the proper starting point and all else can flow from there?

Good morning Splatters. Another weekend has disappeared. Sigh! It was a fun one though :D

On Saturday Mr Nerd and I hosted an Olympics Opening Ceremony party with a dozen friends in a one bedroom apartment. We all got to know each other very well :P It was fun. We didn’t listen to the commentary, and we booed channel 9 for leaving out so many countries in their coverage, but enjoyed ourselves immensely. Spent the night playing taboo and drinking whatever alcohol we found.

On Sunday I got my new tv. It’s so pretty! And it does 3D. Not something I was particularly looking for, but it’s fun. Mr Nerd made me finish my assignment before we could set up my tv. So mean! But it’s done, and we got to spend some time fiddling with all the functions. I think Mr Nerd enjoyed my tv more than I did :P

This week is work, study and the frantic attempt to find birthday presents for my mum (who has everything) and my best friend (who never seems to want anything!). I tried to find presents yesterday and came up empty-handed, so I’m going to spend the rest of the week freaking out. Suggestions are welcome!

Have a great week, and happy birthday Beccann!

I am no help. I want to get something else to put in with my brother’s present, a book about a man living carbon neutral with his family for a year, but I have been empty handed too. Suggestions would be awesomes.

It must be the season. I’m looking for birthday gift ideas for my Dad – being so far away I have no idea what he needs anymore. And I need to post it today or tomorrow to arrive in Brisbane by Friday. Any suggestions welcome! He’s kinda computer-geeky, kinda sci-fi geeky, but not hardcore on either score.

Try Snorg Tees? Al and I were having a laugh at those the other day. And there’s some that aren’t too infinitely geeky that you could give to a parent…

Depending on his situation & likes – a plant or tree? a guide to bike trails in his area? perhaps look up his local council, some have carbon neutral initiatives for residents to join in, see if there is one & what they are running?

They live in a rented apartment and he has planted lots of herbs and things in the communal areas, as well as having many pots of herbs. But, you did remind me that I did want to look into the indoor herb/plant advice book for him. Thanks AlexKJ.

I admit I skimmed the article, but I agree that spelling & grammar etc are an issue these days. I was reading through the latest issue of a certain magazine I read every/almost every month and I managed to pick up 3 mistakes in it, where they’d done an edit on the article but had forgotten to take the original part out (or something like that). Not good, but mind you, compared to some people out there, I can forgive them somewhat since I still understood what they were trying to say.

Weekend wasn’t too bad. Wasted the first part of Saturday morning watching the dregs of the Opening Ceremony. Was bummed to miss the Daniel Craig/the Queen + Rowan Atkinson skits, but I’ve seen bits & pieces & they looked good. I’m now glued to whatever Olympic action I can watch (thank heavens for Foxtel & their 8 Olympic channels) and I’m well & truly into the Olympic spirit, but I certainly won’t be getting up early in the morning to watch events live.

Went & did my beginner’s cupcake decorating class on Saturday, but didn’t end up buying anything cos the shop shut before my class started. I did end up looking in there just to kill time beforehand (got there ridiculously early) & felt equal parts “I’ve died and gone to baking heaven” and overwhelmed at all the products they have. Also got a bit overwhelmed during the class too – the 3 hours went by quickly & I felt like the pace of the class was a bit fast. Probably shouldn’t have sat up the back either – had to share tools with numerous people and fell behind. Ah well. I did catch up eventually. Luckily we didn’t have to bake the cupcakes as well (they are packet mix and you can tell that they are compared to the “from scratch” stuff I bake).

Here’s the finished product. I wasn’t all that happy after the class with my efforts, but looking back now, I shouldn’t have been so hard on myself cos they actually look pretty darn good. Don’t think I’ll be decorating to that extent again, but I’d happily take on a piping class – I’m more interested in that kind of thing than the fancier decorating work.

    Have a good week folks.

A lovely family day on Saturday, then a nice family morning on Sunday before Mr Coaster headed off to golf and I headed of to Belle’s. DJ and I got to have big cuddles from Haven Maven, who is so sweet and funny (but you all knew that already!). Her small humans are rather nice, too. Belle was, as usual, a lovely host, and we had a great morning tea of fruit and gluten free goodies. It was great to see Arty again as well, though I only wish it didn’t take me several hours before realising the muffins she brought were gluten free as well. OM NOM NOM. On the way home I went for a big long drive as DJ slept in the backseat. It was very relaxing and almost like I was alone for almost two hours. Brilliant. Mr Coaster and I had a nice meal – corned beef with mash potato & cabbage – then watched The Green Hornet. It was a good deal of silly fun and I have a major ladyboner for Seth Rogen.

This morning I got the groceries done in record time, but somehow managed to blow the weekly budget. Oops. DJ is sitting beside me slowly smoodging Vegemite toast everywhere. The weather is all shiny and nice and we might go for a walk this afternoon, if I can be bothered.

    Happy Monday!

    • Oh good yes Seth Rogen, not classically attractive but I just like we could be best of friends for ever and he would make me laugh for the rest of my life.

He’s not classically attractive, no, but I do find him attractive, even beyond the “he makes me laugh” level (though that is a big part of it) – I like ordinary guys! I love his crooked grin, and the thick-rimmed glasses he wears, and his unassuming nature and awkward laugh. *dreamy sigh*

Weekend was good for me. We went to see Moonshadow (musical with Cat Stevens music) and had great roti and curry. After, we nipped up to Madame Brussels for some hot buttered rum which was the perfect end to the evening. Yum!

Saturday we popped out for lunch for Al’s brother’s birthday and did some necessary shopping, then a bit of a veg evening. I got new work shoes that feel like slippers. Glorious.

Sunday was brunch at a favourite spot, some more shopping and then quiet afternoon/evening. I miss the weekend already.

Al’s looking at his last days at the current job. Any Melbournites know if their IT departments are looking for a ridiculously good-looking (and super IT) contractor?

Hello from sunny (for now) England. Happy birthday Bec! Hope you had a great day. The boy s well and truly chirpy now as we managed to score him a ticket to see the US basketball team play tomorrow. Pretty much his life dream. Disappointing that we couldn’t get one for me too but I’ll see a show or shop or something.

Loving being back here, so beautiful this time of year.

Late post – this just in! Well we are – having arrived home from Brisvegas late last night.

Had the NICEST weekend! Went up with the munchkins to see my eldest spawn who lives and attends uni in Qld. We are very different, she and I, and so short burst visits seem to work best for us. She also has a darling bf and he treats us all so well – running us around, making lovely homemade lasagne, and excellent coffee! The girls just pick up like they’ve never been apart and I love watching that. We got in early Thursday morning – caught the train up and back which was novel. Spoilt ourselves with First Class seats, donchaknow, but its still a long arse haul trip. Met the big girl after she had an early tute and headed back to her place for lunch and some slothing. Friday was a Girls in the City day – hopped the train into town and girly shopped, ate, giggled, gossiped and more. It was perfect.

Saturday we slept in and then headed into town to meet some other friends of ours – went to their place and sat eating and drinking in front of a lovely warm brazier fire. Simple moments but so very perfect. Kids get along as if they were cousins so that was easy. THen Sunday morning, back into town and out again to be retrieved by the darling Belle of the Ball and welcomed to her home for our Brissie Splatup. Was so lovely to meet her, Loller and Arty. Lots of munchkin snuggles with DJ and excellent snackage – thankyou, Belle, you darling girl.

Then up at sparrows fart yesterday morning to catch the train back home. Nother looong day but it was nice to make it back to our own beds late last night. Just the loveliest, much loved long eweekend in a long time. My cup is full :)
