Must-haves on Monday

I have Google alerts set for my favourite current artists; Jack White,   Nick Cave,  and Tim Minchin.    That way I get the heads-up on tours, new releases and other items of interest. Occasionally I get links to blog sites about these guys and once in a  while something fascinating, like  the 10 weirdest Jack White collectables.

I’m not a collector myself, but there are some interesting ones in here and I do rather fancy the mini-Theremin.

A search on collectables gets a squillion hits and narrowing it to rock and roll collectables still gets more than I can possibly follow. Lists, dreams, aspirations and places like this to  buy stuff you simply must have.

As I said, I don’t collect this kind of stuff myself, but it seems a lot of people do and I know some  Splatters collect stuff from Star Wars and Doctor Who for starters.  If I was less strapped for cash and time I might even do it myself.

Anyway as we start a new week, I’m wondering how your weekend went and what’s coming up this week.

I’m also wondering what is the weirdest/fanciest/most treasured collectable in your possession or on your wish list? Do your friends have collectables that amaze, puzzle or jealousify you?

I’m also wondering, why is jealousify not a word?

Well, firstly, jealousify in that context would not be appropriate. What you feel about your friends’ collectibles is envy, not jealousy, so it would have to be envify (which also isn’t a word).

I don’t really collect things per se. I have a lot of crap but they’re just things I like, not really part of a collection. I mean, I haven’t gone all out to get all the Star Trek collectibles or anything although I do have a couple of Spock figurines. I just like Spock. And I have some Doctor Who stuff. But it’s the Doctor Who stuff I like. I don’t feel a need to collect ALL THE THINGS!

I guess my most treasured collectible is my Luke Skywalker ‘Empire Strikes Back’ collectible reproduction light sabre, signed by Mark Hamill, and in its own display box. That was a gift from my best friend and what a gift! My favourites though are probably some of the signed, framed pictures of some of my favourite characters. David Tennant as Doctor Who, Matt Smith as Doctor Who, Mark Harmon as Leroy Jethro Gibbs, Connor Trinneer as Trip Tucker, Leonard Nimoy as Spock, James Spader as Alan Shore. And of course my signed Gillian Anderson photos, one because she signed it in my presence and one that she sent to me to thank me for the gift that I and a bunch of fellow X-Philes had put together for her and her daughter.

Like Pokey, I don’t really have a collection of a specific item or theme, though I could err towards items relating to frogs, rabbits and of course alpacas. I have treasured possessions such as a leather bound entire works of Shakespeare that was given to my Great Grandfather by his parents in the 1800′s. Yes, I read it.. with a magnifying glass the type is so small.

Everyday is a bit insane at the moment Splatmates with the countdown well and truly on.

On Saturday I took 3 girls to their new home (the nice people who are offering agistment and space to store my gear). Once again, I’m astounded by people’s generosity. These folk are bringing a trailer to my place this morning to collect large items such as portable pens and feed bins. They said “you have too much going on and we want to help you”. Bless their cotton socks.

I’m really, really emotional at the moment and am prone to teary outbursts at the most inappropriate times; like woolies checkout or paying the man at the tip (he gave me a discount). The alpacas are all going to their new abodes this week and this is my last full week on the farm. It’s not like I’m depressed; I think there is a bit of grief in there somewhere though. I think it’s just the enormity of the change and I am going to miss not seeing the animals everyday dreadfully.

This morning two other breeders are coming over to help me shift the main group of girls to their agistment. It will be a little convoy of vans and trailer. It should be a barrel of laughs (not) loading up, as there are a few ferals amongst them and it is so muddy here it’s going to be a very grubby job. It’s only 15 mins up the road so at least it isn’t a long haul.

The ‘H’ squad (thanks PP, that’s a great expression), the bachelor boys, Big, Isabella, her mum and a couple of oldies, all go to their respective new homes on Friday.

I told the people who are looking after Big, Issy and her mum to also come and help themselves to fencing equipment I have here. I won’t have time to sell it. It keeps these folk happy so my animals get preferential treatment and also.. those idiot new buyers wanted it but didn’t want to pay for it, so stuff em.

Mum is coming down on Thurs/Fri to help me pack and she is so happy that Holyfield and Isabella will still be here. The packing is a bit of a pain as I’m packing up my stuff and the Ex’s stuff as well. At least I get to keep the stuff I really like.. he gets the crap I’m not that fond of :D

On Wednesday, when the vet comes to give the H boys the ‘two stone diet’, I’m also having a girl ‘Lannah’ put to sleep. That’s going to be really, really tough.

Lannah has a strange metabolic problem and has lost condition. This has happened before a couple of years back and it took an enormous amount of work and effort to get her back into condition. I have really tussled with this and had a long chat to the vet last week about it.

She has quality of life at this very moment but will get worse when winter really kicks in and I can’t expect someone else to put in the effort required over the next few months. Equally, if they aren’t up to the challenge, she won’t make it and will die a slow death and I can’t allow that to happen.

So with eyes that look like piss holes in the snow and armed with a stack of tissues and rescue remedy, I’ll push on splatters. But I’m still smiling :)

Hope you all have a great week.

    • Big splugs, Kanga – and worry not about the tears. There’s greiving, yes, but probably also just a good deal of pent up stress.

Close your eyes and take good, deep breathes. Then, take better, deeper glasses of wine. ;)

Good morning! I’m able to post early today as the little munchkin is having a sleep-in. Poor thing often has broken sleep from around 6am onwards. Most mornings he is ready to be gotten up at 7am, but today I guess he would rather sleep in :) Can’t blame him, I wish I could have stayed in bed, too.

I’m feeling a touch stressy about my flight on Thursday. Just nervous about taking the baby as we’ve never done that before. I hope he will be OK and we’ll be sitting near patient people. I’m also tuning my brain inside out trying to think of everything I’m going to need to pack and take. I hope I don’t forget anything!

Yesterday was an awesome day. We headed in to South Bank for a family day out. Once we actually got on our way, anyway. I had to race to Coles for more baby formula, and while I was doing that an entire glass of soft drink was knocked from the table into DJ’s tub of toys, so that had to be cleaned out and sorted and all the toys thrown in the washer or cleaned by hand. It was past DJ’s sleep time at that point so he just followed everyone around screaming and crying. At South Bank he was cheerful after sleepin in the car, so we wandered through the markets, had morning tea, had lunch later on in the gardens, a walk along the river, etc. the weather was beautiful. We then went for a big drive to Mt Cotton so that DJ could have a proper sleep in the backseat.

Splugs to all. Happy Monday xx

The only thing I collect is animals, and that has been drastically reduced as TLG is very common sense and keeps reminding me that we aren’t home enough to give any animals proper love and attention.

The weekend was fantastic, although every winery wanted to know when we were getting married! TLG has said that for every stranger that asks he will have to wait another year before asking me as he wants it to be a surprise. I don’t like that idea much at all! We had a lovely day though and got to try some wineries we havent been to before, which is always fun.

We both have the Monday Blues, but I am fixing that for myself by going through my to do list for the house and getting things ticked off :-)

Happy Monday everyone, free splugs for all and an especially big splug for our lovely Smoph on her BIRTHDAY!!!!!

I guess I collect books. I need to do more than just read the book. It’s what makes me go out and get a real life version even if I’ve bought the ebook. I need to add to my collection. Especially if it’s part of a series, or part of a collection by a particular author. I feel the need to complete the set.

My weekend was surprisingly fabulous. Friday night I dropped Mr Nerd at the airport and despite my best efforts of course I blubbered as soon as he said goodbye. I’m hopeless – cry at everything! And the hard thing is not that I can’t see him, it’s that I can’t communicate with him. All this little stuff that happens during the day I can’t send him because it costs money to do that. But I’m being a baby. It’s 3 weeks! Hardly a lifetime. I shall survive. And probably even enjoy myself.

Saturday I went shopping with a friend from my old work, after which she came back to my place and we turned building Ikea furniture into a drinking game. Note: Best suited to very simple products! Once we’d thoroughly congratulated ourselves for putting together the coffee table (bright red and I LOVE it!!) we skyped another work friend in Brisbane and proceeded to down tequila shots. It was fantastic – almost like he was in the room with us. Definitely going to do that again!

Yesterday was my day of organising. I pottered around my apartment, built some my furniture, did some washing. It was nice, really. I certainly miss Mr Nerd but it’s nice to have some time to potter as well. Then last night I had my family over for dinner. My dad’s just come back from interstate so I got to show off my place to him. It was all just a very NICE weekend.

    And now it’s Monday… sigh!

Exam on Wednesday. I’m almost looking forward to it. I must be sick!

    Have a great week Splatters!

I collected coins when I was young but gave that up when I ran out of time and money and enthusiasm for it. I think that was when I was about twelve.

I did buy D1 a pencil sketch of Jean-Luc Picard for her birthday once. She is a mad fan of Jean-Luc. On one of my trips to the USA I bought a very nice illustrated leather-bound edition of The Lord of the Rings. I’m not sure that’s a collectable but it does have price of place on the bookshelf.

Had lunch and much alcohol at D2′s yesterday. Very nice indeed, although I don’t remember anything from after lunch until about 10pm last night when I woke up long enough to get out of the recliner and go upstairs to bed. Going to friends’ place for early dinner, booze, and cards today. So, another weekend successfully taken care of.

I wouldn’t consider myself a collector. I did, for the longest time, have a very large amount of magazines that I found *very* hard to get rid of, but I wouldn’t say that I am a collector as most are now collection dusty germs in Dr’s offices.

Went home for the weekend to see family. Was a great visit. Sadly I’ve been a bit sick of late and wasn’t really able to hide it from my parents, which caused unnecessary concern. I’m usually pretty good at keeping healthy and thought that one weekend of bad eating would be okay, but it wasn’t. I spent most of Sunday sick with chest pains, heart palpitations, headaches and the shakes. Other than that, I had a great weekend. Relaxed at ‘West Lakes’ resort/hotel. Went shopping and spent too much money on some great deals including some funky yellow shoes that I can’t wait to work!

Flight home wasn’t to flash! Why is it that people insist on lying back on a 1.5hr flight? And right in the middle of my meal causing me to spill hot tortellini all over my lap? Oi vei!

They are not supposed to put them back while meals are in progress and it’s just plain bad manners anyway. You should have stood up and ‘accidentally’ brushed the tortellini off yourself onto their head.

Anyone here (Pokey, Alex?) got much experience working with Royal Icing? I bought powder from the cake supplies store on the weekend rather than use fresh eggs (keen not to poison 100 people at the wedding, even if it is only a super slim chance) but I whipped and whipped and it never formed stiff peaks?

Also tips on piping intricate and not so intricate patterns onto a tiered wedding cake also gratefully accepted :-)

My weekend was pretty good, finally splurged on some decent 1000 thread count sheets as they were half price at Harris Scarfes even though it pains me to part with decent money for such things! I don’t know why, it’s not like $70 is going to break the bank and I spend that on other stuff willingly.

Don’t be ashamed to spoil yourself. After all, you spend about a third of your life lying on sheets. Why shouldn’t they feel nice?

Royal icing for piping? I get a premix stuff from the cake decoration shop and you just need to mix it with water like ordinary icing. I’ve never whipped royal icing in my life, not even when making it from scratch with pure icing sugar and egg whites. Just stirred in the egg white until the icing was stiff enough to pipe.

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

    • Pokeybun

Oh and as for piping onto a tiered wedding cake, I’d make sure I did any piping before I assembled the cake into tiers. But you probably did that.

        Hi Pokey,

The instructions on the powder I bought said 6 teaspoons of the powder to one teaspoon water (to make a small amount). This was super runny though so I assumed I had to whip it with beaters, which I did (no stiff peaks) so kept adding more powder until I had at least soft peaks forming. I googled instructions though and it said for powder mixes normally you have to whip for 7-10 minutes so I assumed that was the case? With egg white royal icing I’ve always whipped that before too…

I was just doing a test run at doing delicate piping (not my forte) so haven’t had to do the actual cake yet, but thanks for the tip about piping before assembling :-)

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

        • Pokeybun

Bizarre. As I said, I’ve never whipped royal icing in my life and I’ve used it a lot. Here’s the recipe I’ve used hundreds of times before (so you can see the method).

2 1/2 cups pure icing sugar
          1 egg white
          1/2 teaspoon lemon juice

Sift icing sugar through very fine sieve.

Put egg white in a bowl. Stir in icing sugar, a tablespoonful at a time until icing is the desired consistency.

When icing reaches desired consistency, stir in lemon juice and food colouring if desired.

I find it very difficult to understand how you could pipe words and trellises and things with royal icing that was of a stiff peak consistency. It needs to be runnier than that.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

          • Dog

Yeah, dunno, when I did a cake decorating class we had to beat the royal icing too till it formed peaks (they may have been soft peaks as it was able to be easily piped with), weird! Anyhoo, I’ll use the powder I’ve got and just add less water and if that doesn’t turn out then I’ll just have to go back to using egg whites. I’m sure no one will get Salmonella. Thanks for your help!

I was just thinking I don’t really collect anything then I saw Dog’s post. I collect lovely bedding. I’m a Manchester hoor. I’ve about 5 sets of Egyptian cotton sheets, and about the same of really lovely quilt covers. I have european pillows, throw pillows – the business. My bed – when I bother – actually can look like a design mag.

And oh! Design mags!! I have elebenty billion…

My weekend – ohmahfuhreakingawd. If I told you what I had planned and what ended up eventuating you’d call bullshit and probably drink with me for fear of me drinking too much alone :P

Ok – fri night – dinner out with my gorgeous schoolfriends and then later I had planned to catch up with the fellow who appeared back out of the woodwork. Well, we did. Remarkably dull. Awesome lol. Then next day I was sposed to catch up that night with the fellow whom I think likes me more than I like him – but anyway. His opening communication that day after I messaged good morning was ‘what happened last night??’ *fingerpoint accuse accuse tone* Shot him a pic of the girls and I at dinner. He then attempts a recovery – claiming to have been ‘concerned’ because I hadn’t msgd him all night. This fellow and I have been on two dates, people. I cracked it at him, saying if he has a problem with me seeing my friends and having a life, there is a larger problem at foot. He kept up with this bullshit concerned stance. I called bullshit. A few times. He admitted to thinking the worst. I told him words to the effect that he should *&%&$* up and die.

So I went and saw my gf with the delicious new baby. And we man bitched. And laughed. And bitched some more :P Came home and spoke to my best guy friend and told him how efficient I had been at dude removal. He was asking if I could make it a hat trick my Monday. I told him I think I’d indeed try.

SO yesterday morning, nuther fellow messages…tell himIm doing my tax, he starts telling me how there are penalties for doing it late, that I’d need an accountant blah blah blah. I reminded him that I have had my own business for more than 10 years. This fellow and I have had ONE date, people. So I told him he got out of bed on the wrong side…

But was I done? Oh no! Not even apparently close.

Was sent the funniest ecard thingo on my Fb that was a lovely sentiment about farking off. Lots. Decided to send it to Cranky Ranga (ex bf). Realised this was a bridge I needed not just to burn, but to dynamite. I did. With aplomb. To the point he asked me to stop. :) Also told him about his nicknames – Cranky Ranga and Sideshow Bob. Look – I know I am going to hell, but he drove me half way there, and I bloody well want a window seat!

So this week….I might try Yoga?

  • I am not a collector of stuff related to pop culture because I move a lot and I don’t like having to pack at all. I used to collect DVDs and CDs but now I buy the music/ movies/ TV series I want to keep on iTunes and store them electronically. It is an amazing space saver.

Actually thinking back to the packing process I am a clothing, footwear and handbag collector but I guess I don’t categorise those the same way I would memorabilia. I have sizeable collections of each of those; despite the hard work I have done parting with much loved items to make the move cheaper and easier.

Weekend was nice, pretty laid back and I got a tonne of cooking done for a friend’s party that I have volunteered to cater next Saturday. I will be going to SupaNova as well which I am really looking forward to.

I don’t really collect anything to be honest. Over the years I’ve had to move too often and if I had been a collector it would have made it 100x harder.

As for my weekend, well on saturday I worked most of the day at my bestie’s cafe then at the last minute ended up at Supernova in the afternoon with MM and his best friend and his GF. I had a blast! We were only there a couple of hours but it was alot of fun. Some of the costumes were crazy, like the little boy dressed as Anakin Skywalker, plus there was the bikini clad girls walking around chained together by the collar( Ii think they were supposed to be Jabba the Hutt’s slave girls perhaps??). Gotta say the most strange was the grown men dressed up as Sailor Moon. Total WTF there!! LOL.

Sunday I had my folks visiting so spent the morning with my dad and niece then last night went to the movies with my bestie and we saw Rock of Ages. I gotta say it was better than I expected, was alot of fun singing along to all the 80′s songs. Tom Cruise did way better than I thought, I really enjoyed him in it which is saying something as I’m not usually a fan of his these days.

Was a great weekend, it was just over too soon.

Saw ‘Rock of Ages’ on the weekend too and have to say that I thought it was terrible! If I wasn’t with my Mum, I would have left! I thought it was going to be grungy and cool, instead I was left with a ‘Glee-esque Ballard crap-fest’.

Only redeeming qualities in this film were Tom Cruise, Malin Akerman & Alec Baldwin and only just!

That’s a bummer poppit. I went into it thinking it would probably be terrible. I was born in ’82 so I really enjoyed all the 80′s music and singing and like Becca said, spotting the cameos. I collect books. And photos of scifi actors. And Star Wars stuff. I think my Chewie plushie will go with me overseas.

Epic weekend was epic. Boring work is boring.

Supanova was on in Sydney. I attended Saturday. Twelve books signed. Four for my brother. According to Christopher Paolini I am an awesome sister. Garth Nix is amazing and really nice. A harem of slave Leias and mused got a pic with Matthew Reilly.

I went as Vala. Got photobombed by Darth Vader. Gained a harem of slave girls. Only bought a keyring and food all day. It was epic still.

Yesterday was the commemoration of Soviet deportations. It was good. Choir sang fantastically.

All I need to do now is survive the end of work and pack for Finland.

Will post photo links for those not on my fb later. Also did a Sydnova blog post.guess it would make a good Splat On post too!

Happy birthday, Smoph!! Hope you are having a great day!

I am not a collector of any particular thing, but lots of things. So is Mr FB. Well, we must be because somehow we have more stuff than we could fit into the average house. We have the space, so it gets filled – cars, bits of cars, other people’s furniture, etc. If we ever decide to move into a new house, we will have to start culling stuff years beforehand!
Weekend was awesome. Had heaps of washing to do, so went out and I was wearing tracksuit pants and a daggy top (my good stuff was in the wash) and naturally we saw a few people that we know. Embarrassing! Yesterday we went down to Victor to see the guy Mr FB used to work with and on the way home I noticed that a light was on at my parents holiday house, so we called in to see who it was. Luckily, it was The Olds and not some random squatters.
It’s only Monday and I can’t wait for next weekend – so bored at work.
Hope everyone is well and happy!
