On TV and in the movies, everyone has a theme song.
Whether it’s the sinister clarinet as the bank robbers enter the branch, or the bouncy saxophone accompanying Benny Hill’s latest chase, the music sets the tone for the scene and tells you what the characters are up to.
What are you up to this weekend? And what theme song best suits you whilst you’re doing it?

Right now I am listening to a live band playing the standards with a jazz interpretation, and a slight reggae feel to the vocal phrasing. It’s a very interesting mix.
As for FOF, I’m listening to the band after dinner, at the Royal Palm resort in north Mauritius. We have been here a week, and have a week and a half to go. I’m just so glad that I didn’t have to pay for my business class flights (thanks Mum), as this is said to be the best resort in Mauritius, and given the level of service & amenities, I believe it. We have have been so spoiled, with 5+ star fine dining, even at breakfast, but especially at dinner.
We met our cousin and his wife for the first time when they came to dine with us at the hotel, and the staff couldn’t do enough for us to make sure it all went perfectly. From a small posy of flowers as a gift for the lady, to reserving the best table, and the maitre’d looking after us himself – it couldn’t have played out any better. We got on really well with our guests, swapped lots of family stories, had good conversation, and they have invited us out for the day on Sunday.
The resort has a glass-bottomed boat to take us out to see the coral reefs – interesting but not a patch on ours – it’s very bleached and damaged – we think a combo of weather and humans. There is also a few boats to take out people who want to go snorkelling or scuba diving, and a speedboat to take you out – we got them to take us to town the other day to go shopping, and it was a lot of fun. Thinking of doing that again tomorrow.
Saturday we leave here and go to Dinarobin resort in the south of the island, and will be quite busy there as a lot more of the sights are in the south.
I haven’t really had time to comment before, although I have read a few of the daily postings, as I have had to fend off a small crisis at home whilst away. Bloody lawyers.
Anyway, Kanga, I’m glad things are sorting themselves out and you can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Cazzy, I think your comments are read by more people that you think, even if we don’t always comment on it. But if you look you will see you get ‘likes’.
Ghrys – well done on the ad research, but you *really shouldn’t* get sucked into daytime TV – after all, Days of Our Lives storylines are the same every year, aren’t they? And Pokey might brain you with the wok if you keep singing “hot potato, hot potato”.
OK, off to bed for me. Splugs to all, happy Friday and have a good weekend.
Cheers!!
Your holiday sounds AWESOME Alex. So glad you’re having a great time
Yes, it does sound divine! Very envious!
My theme song changes depending what is going on in my life. For some bizarre reason, I keep getting ‘Spanish Flea’ in my head (not sure how to post links). At least it cracks me up.
Less than two weeks to go Splatters with settlement on 28th June.
Mum calls me each day to see how I’m going and my stock standard reply is “I’ll get there”. It’s become a bit of a family joke now.
The people buying the property pulled another swifty last week. They wanted to buy the heavy equipment (tractor et al) which was great ’cause the heavy stuff is really hard to get rid off. We had agreed on a price and then the very next day they rang the agent and said they’d changed their mind and didn’t want anything. The agent thought it might have been another ploy. If settlement arrived and I hadn’t sold the stuff they could offer virtually nothing and I would have to accept.
I fell into a decline and a bottle of wine.
Anyhoo.. the next day, with a bit of a headache, I went into the stockfeed merchant (feed for the spitters) to pay my account and announced loudly “Anyone wanna buy a Tractor?”
The owner of the feedstore came hooning out of his office. He’d just bought himself a new property. That afternoon I’d sold the tractor, post hole digger, slasher, superphosphate spreader, ride on mower, air compressor and other bits and bobs. Phew!! What’s more, there was no messing around. He came up to look at the stuff, we agreed on a price and shook hands on it. I had a cheque the next day and he took the stuff away. A proper country bloke who knows how to do business. The other people can suck eggs.
The same time this was all happening, I thought I may have sold most of the herd of alpacas to another breeder as well. It was a dream come true. Sure enough, that fell through as well, so back to square one.
I’ve been a bit stressed about the animals and contacted the two different people who have previously offered me agistment. I went to look at one place yesterday and it’s great.
I can’t believe how wonderful people are being. None of the places where I’m parking the pacas will accept money. One fellow said he couldn’t accept money because I’d helped him quite a bit when he first got alpacas. The other bloke who will be taking the bachelor boys even said I could leave any of the gear I haven’t sold at his place til I come back from UK. I told him I’d like to give him two pregnant females to thank him for his kindness and generosity and he came over all emotional.
So next week I’ll be shifting 59 alpacas whilst still packing boxes.
The vet is coming next wednesday to castrate my little boys (Harlequin, Haven, Holyfield, Houdini, Horatio, Heathcliffe and Hermes). I adore my little boys.. Haven and Holyfield especially love hugs, so when things get too much, I can be assured of paca cuddles.
It was a tough call to castrate them, as some of them actually have potential to become stud males but they are far to young to be running with the bachelor boys on agistment (they’d get hammered) and will have to run with the girls. As they are at that age where they’re starting to ‘think’ about doing the wild thing, it is best that they part ways with their crown jewels and I’ll keep them as pets.
I could go on for hours with everything that’s happening but it’s time to get cracking.
Have a great weekend everyone. Hugs and splugs to all.
Aww Teary here!
You are doing the right thing by your little ones Kanga (as if you didnt know already!) I’m glad somethings at least are going smoothly.
Suck eggs isnt half of what I would say to the buyers (once everything is signed sealed and delivered)… How would you feel about cooked prawns in the curtain rails?
xxxxooo
Keep on keeping on, it will get better and you will get there!
Agree with Jess here. They’re going to get a nasty shock about country dealings. People remember being treated poorly there, and the community is smaller, so you have less opportunity to stuff up.
If they do come back and ask I’d tell them I’d got desperate because I didn’t know what to do with them so I gave them to charity. Shame they didn’t come back three days earlier or they could have had them for nothing…
Otherwise, it’s great to hear everything seems to be aligning for you. poor little H (and the H squad). I’ll cross my legs for them.
An close friend of my granfathers grew up in the country – he told me that he’d trust a handshake in the back paddock over a lawyer’s contract any day.
Your buyers sound like arseholes. I hope they have bitten off more than they can chew – and I’m so bloody glad you sold all your big stuff. Thats awesome.
My poor little namesake being de-nadded
Its ok really. I’ve been castrating males for years apparently…:P
LMFAO.. Gold!
Interesting question. I think mine might be ‘Senses Working Overtime’ by XTC. It pretty much describes the way I approach things and it’s one of my ‘dancing around the loungeroom’ songs; one of those songs I can play when I’m feeling a bit down and it never ceases to cheer me up and make me want to dance.
I am a wee bit excited at the moment. The lovely Belle of the Ball forwarded me an email yesterday telling me that Sir David Attenborough is coming to Brisbane in August and will be speaking in the QPAC Concert Hall for one night. I leapt on the QPAC website and bought tickets immediately. They were expensive but I consider them worth every cent as I think this will probably be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me for me to see my absolute idol in the flesh and hear him talk about his amazing life. It is possible that I’m more excited about this than I am about my wedding*.
In other news, over the past few weeks, I’ve been helping the school next to the project on which I work. I’ve joined some classrooms to talk to the kids about the relationship between the construction industry and the environment and I’ve been helping to paint the mural in their playground. It’s a fantastic mural with a large underwater scene and a beach on one wall and a field with trees and animals on the other. The art teacher has been painting it over the past year but she doesn’t get much time to work on it so I offered to help. On Wednesday I painted two swimming King Penguins on the underwater bit and the staff and students love them. Made me feel all warm and fuzzy. Sometimes my job can be fun.
And my nephew’s partner gave birth to healthy twins on Wednesday. I’m thrilled with the births, not so thrilled with the choice of names which are…creative…to say the least (as is the name of their other son). Made me think back to our recent discussion here of names and I’ve finally come to the realisation that my nephew and his lovely other half, much as I love them, are bogans
.
*just kidding Ghryswald
Well, it *is* Sir David Attenborough.
My weekend’s soundtrack will be manic yet amusing Charlie Chaplin-esque piano. This shall accurately convey the running around madly at shops and home, trying to get everything sorted for my trip to Melbourne next week.
The rest of my weekend will be ho-hum. Mr Coaster is working tomorrow so I will probably take lunch to him to ensure he has a proper break. I don’t think we have any plans for Sunday.
Tonight I’m off to Rave’s for dinner with her, an old workmate, and our partners. There shall also be Bacardi, gin, and Absolute Balderdash, so it should be hilarious.
Now, the most important part: MELBOURNE. HELLO. I am flying down on Thursday and shall remain for 11 days! What are we doing?
Oo! Oo! Friday night Splat up? I assume DJ will be with you so Family Friendly is in order?
So the other thing I should say is, as I’m staying with almost-family, they will probably want to monopolise my time for the first few days – if people are free the second weekend I’m there (the end of the month), that’d probably be heaps easier for me!
And yes, DJ will be with me
Edit – Or a weeknight is fine if it suits people, too
I’m a suit person! I’ll be there!
I’ll be there, too. Provided I don’t get accosted by strange people in the Flinders St subway again like I did this morning. -looks askance at Plucker-
How about the Thursday? 28th?
I was on my bestest behaviour.
Thursday 28 sounds just fine to me
Can do Thurs 28th
My theme song lately is either oshiguru from two and a half men or the runaway train. (Cant link atm sorry)
Thanks Ghrys for your research yesterday, maybe the stations have picked up their act, or maybe you got a good day.
This weekend will see us doing some prework for TLG’s 30th next year. We have got a car hired to take us to wineries that we havent been to, and we are staying at the Irish pub
TLG has graciously offered to take my Grandfather (who is visiting from QLD) and his friends out for dinner tonight and they have accepted. I am very glad that I’ll get to see my GG again!
Other than that the weekend will see us finalising our lighting and electrical plan for the house as well as researching for tiles and carpets.
Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend.
xxx
I think my theme song could be Manamana – The Muppets. It is random and a little bit silly, so that works pretty well.
Otherwise I’d lean toward the Star Wars Imperial March.
My Mum has made it kwown that at her funeral she wants Morning Has Broken to be played. While my mate wants Korn’s Did My time played at his.
My brother, who is 10 years younger than me, enjoyed reminding me that he earned more than I did over the last several months. Last night we had dinner and I let him know that is no longer the case. Worth it for his expression alone. Mwahahaha!
No excitement planned for the weekend. Maybe a haircut. Otherwise quiet as I try and shake off the remnants of the cold I picked up last weekend.
It’s interesting to hear about Morning Has Broken being used at funerals (an acoustic version was played at a friend of the boys who passed away a little while ago too). It was my parents wedding song!
My eldest brother had it at his wedding too. Goodness, that’s at least 35 years ago now.
Hmmm not too sure about theme songs for me. I do get ‘Staying alive’ in the head when I’m charging (Read: Strutting) to the train station most mornings. However, like most parents of youngsters, most of the thoughts instantly gravitate to my little munchkin eg:
- When she’s upset: It’s the end of the world as we know it
- When I’m changing her: Brown eyed girl
Funny how social dynamics change over time. First you have all the 18th birthdays, then 21sts, engagements, weddings and then comes the waves of babies. I’ve brought some stuff to work to give to a mate, which he left at our house a couple of weekends ago. That stuff consists of a spoon and a baby mitten.
Otherwise it was an interesting week, with me telling my boss exactly what they were doing wrong and watching them get all sheepish. It’ll be interesting to see what happens next, but the signs so far indicate my boss missed the point of our conversation completely.
Pronk on, all, and have a good weekend.
Ohhh Plucker – I can *just* imagine your strut!
I get that song for strutting too. HAha.
I have one – Sheena Easton’s ‘Strut’. Its all colours of the awesome spectrum.
INXS – Just Keep Walking
Ohh.. love that song.
It’s Friday, the weekend is near and we are finishing early for drinks, so my song is “Get Happy”. Haven’t had a chance to Splat in ages, between being in a new open plan office, and GB and I heading back to England and Ireland again, and life just being incredibly hectic. Also, facing the task of planning two weddings (Australia and England), eloping is looking better and better. Have been checking in every chance I get though.
My weekend song will either be “We are Family” or something involving bad words due to a pinched nerve that needs to be sorted. But pinched nerve or not, it’s nearly the weekend, and that’s worth a Happy Dance.
Hope you all have a great one
Good to see you Jasper. Sounds like hard work but I bet it will be worth it.
Now singing quite a lot of songs as Avenue Q is on at the Brisbane Arts Theatre and I just booked tickets
Fantastic, we were talking logistics the other day, I will definitely be hitting you up for tips in a year or two!!
Mmmm theme song. Good question.
Tonight Mr Nerd is heading off to Europe on holiday for three weeks, so I might indulge in a little “I’m so lonely” Team America style. No doubt I’ll be feeling very sorry for myself for a little while.
But I can’t stay sad forever. Tomorrow I’m catching up with a good friend from my old work and we’re going shopping, followed by a trip to Ikea to get my bright red coffee table (win!!!) and then back to my place for much wine and dvds. Very “Girls just wanna have fun”.
I think I’ll be a bit up and down over the next few weeks while Mr Nerd is away. I know it’s only three weeks, and I’m excited for him, but even though I’ve lined up lots of lovely friends to catch up with, I think I’ll be a bit of a sad panda. Sigh. I better get an AWESOME present when he gets back!!
You’ll be less lonely if you come out to a Splat Up…
Haha I should be able to, just depends when. I can’t do the last Friday of the month, but if it’s the Saturday or any weeknight other than Tuesday I’m in. I’ll even be study free! Got my programming exam this week. I’ve had a perfect score for assignments so far, hopefully I can ace the exam too
How about “All By Myself” ala Bridget Jones?
Hope you can make the Splat Up! xx
Today is a bit shit, more bad news and stuff.
My theme song would be “I believe in a thing called love” by The Darkness, even when single I do believe and I like the way the song makes me feel like doing stuff even when I don’t want to.
I am having dinner at a friends tonight and then out for cards with friends tomorrow. Other than that just some packing and organising, I think I am about done. It’s times like this I’m glad it’s just furniture and not farm equipment (Splugs and congrats Kanga, you’re a legend in my opinion).
Splugs to all who need them.
Nawww, thanks beccaann and huge splugs to you. I hope things get better.
Hello Splatmates!!
Well life is a funny old bag of peas isnt it? I’m recovering from the flu fog that has engulfed Casa Maven and the Mavenettes this past week. My big girl has finished her exams and has had a bit of a hard week with things happening in her life but seems good now. My middle one is off at camp til 4pm this arvo so its just been me and the cherub for the past few days. Its nice hanging with my baby girl – doesn’t happen often just she and I. She really is lots of fun.
Work is good. I think I’ve found my groove. Loving my workmates.
Money- never enough. Fighting Centrelink atm – feel my IQ drop 20 points everytime…
My theme song. Well – I’m back enjoying the delights of dating again, and men are almost coming out of the woodwork lol. I had one fellow I met sort me out with a new radiator for my car at cost. Win!! Have another couple of fellows paying me a delicious amount of attention at the moment. Catching up with a couple of them this weekend. Had a lovely boy that was very pleasant company bit over a year ago reappear – perfect timing methinks.
My theme song? This week I think its the song from Rocky Horror ‘In just seven days – I can make you a maaaaaaaaan’
Not “It’s raining men”?
Al – if you’ve ever seen the original video of that song, you too would try and imagine it waaaaay less, and reach for brain bleach.
As well they should
My theme song is The Clockyard by Abney Park.
My battle song is The March of Cambreadth by Heather Alexander
And since I’m hacking out some code for the brew shop today, studying code this weekend for my job interview on Tuesday, and doing some tech support for a friend on Sunday, this weekend’s theme song is Code Monkey by Jonathan Coulton
Yes, I did just say “job interview.” I’m hoping for good results. We shall see.
Fingers crossed!
Good luck!
Pretzelled!
Got all extremities crossed for you!
Fingers and toes pretzelled.
Thanks all!
Please unpretzel before operating heavy machinery.
Like Plucker, when I strut – Stayin’ Alive
Driving – Highway Star or sometimes Bad Habit or Misery Machine
Working – Caffeinated Consciousness
Vacuuming/housework (otherwise known to my MyFitnessPal friends as Krytening it up) – I Want to Break Free
I want to break free made me almost snort tea.
Mental picture of
You snorting tea almost made
Me snort my coffee
Pink Pvc?
A really daggy song but one that resonates whenever I hear it. “Wish You Were Here” PF.
It applies to so much stuff that has happened in my emotional life on many levels.
I suppose that is one of my many many songs.
