So we arrived at the Sunshine Coast to a weekend of rain. Which is fine but it meant a lot of time we could have been out with my folks and brother and his girlfriend we were sort of stuck indoors.
I know lots of us are going to be having a chilled out holiday today, so I was wondering what you do with your families when it’s cold and wet?
Woot, first to post!
Erm, what do I do with my fam when it’s cold & wet? Well, judging by yesterday’s effort, not much at all. We all slothed about, the ‘rents both had naps snuggled up under the covers & my Mum did a roast dinner, that’s it. I guess you could surmise that we stay indoors, try and keep warm (not easy in a house that has no central heating & tiled floors, but we manage) & also eat warming food.
As for the rest of my weekend (since I guess we’re MMMing too), didn’t do a whole lot, so I’ll talk about Friday instead….my Mum & I went out for a Thai lunch in McMahon’s Point, using up the last of 3 online coupons we had for various restaurants. Food was nommy, weather was nice, except for the air – ’twas bitterly cold on Friday morning. We certainly got a workout making our way to the restaurant – up a steep set of stairs from the ferry wharf & walking up roads of various inclines. Certainly tested my fitness! Was nice to go to a part of your own city that you’ve never been to before.
After that, we went back into the city for a few hours before meeting my Dad later on check out the Vivid lights. Note to any Sydney Splatfolk who’ve ever thought about going & seeing it – (a) go on a weeknight when it’s less busy and (b) definitely don’t go on the Friday night before the June long weekend! It was packed and we didn’t see a whole lot due to the crowd, which was disappointing. I don’t know if what we saw excited us all that much either. I think my folks & I were just over it in the end.
Hope everyone else who’s having a long weekend has had a good one.
Shame about Vivid. We went a few years ago and some of the shows were lovely, plus some cool light based sculptures!
But dinner sounds fun. I always think that we don’t do enough exploring in our home towns. There are fun and exciting changes sometimes! Glad you and your Mum had a good time though.
Traditional family wet weather activities tend to involve card games. 500, Samba, some others I can’t remember the name of right now. Monopoly has also been pulled out on many occasions, though rarely played through to conclusion.
I picked up a cold so am having a pretty crappy long weekend.
We played Taboo. It’s interesting that the younger couples communicated a lot better (my brother and his girl, and Al and I).
D2 lent me seasons 1 & 2 of Haven. Spent yesterday watching half of Season 1.
Not great. Based on a Stephen King novel that I haven’t read (didn’t know there was such a thing) and I can only assume they’ve lightened it up a bit. Still, it’s as good as the usual pap on TV, no ad breaks, and I can watch it when it suits me. That makes it a winner.
Up very late indeed today, but a successful reduction in the sleep deficit so I’m cool with that.
I have to write a business plan for work. Supposed to do it at work – yeah, right; I have that kind of spare time at work. Supposed to be in last week, so I’d better get to.
Going over to D1′s place when she gets back from wherever she is. GS1 got 70% in his maths exam. When she complained, he pointed out that if you took the algebra out then he got 100%. As he missed the introductory algebra lessons that was sort of understandable. However, he seems to think algebra doesn’t matter. I pointed out that he runs second only to Sheldon Cooper in geekiness and that Science is all algebra and calculus and that, furthermore, you need the algebra to do the calculus. So, anyway, he has agreed to devote this afternoon to getting a grip on algebra. We shall see how that goes.
Probably not his ideal solution for handling a rainy day, but it could have been worse – it could have been a nice day.
That sucks it rained out your holiday. I grew up on the Sunshine Coast and much life the rest of Qld, it is poorly prepared for rain. I think your options basically boil down to going to the shopping center and seeing a movie with 10000s of other people or staying home. It is the downside of an outdoors orientated life style. My plans for a picnic, bike ride and rock climb over the weekend were washed away.
Yes, that’s the thing. My hopes of some warmth and sunshine were sadly dashed. We got a little sunshine and a walk down to Mooloolaba today though!
Yes, once we realised the shops WERE open, we headed down for lunch and a mooch. Fifty gazillion other people there, approximately. We did get some new blurays and a new book for DJ, though.
We are having the Great West Australian Sleep Over this week with thousands of families forced by wild weather damage to find refuge with friends and other family members for up to a week. Being the bottom floor in a three storey complex has some advantages; I doubt very much my roof will come off.
I have three extra housemates till the end of the week and five members of staff had to go home today to save their personal possessions from potential (further) rain damage.
Of course it isn’t a long week end for us we got in before the weather and had ours last week.
As for what I normally get up to in this knid of weather the answer would be a cozy blanket and a good book or a good game with friends/ family. What I actually did was batten down the hatches and stay away from any major roads as car accidents were rife this weekend, I think most West Australians in the metro area did something similar.
Wow! Crazy weather. Hope your 3 housemates and workmate escape the worst of it. Quiet workplace today but I bet!
Had some gastro thingo all weekend. Perfect weather to lie in bed, not so much to be sitting on a porcelain pot with feet on porcelain tiles ever so regularly.
Bah- should have let me know you were in the area!
Well my weekend started with me going home from work early as I was sitting at my desk and getting dizzy and feeling generally horrible. I went to the doctor and got Saturday off work. Stupidly went to work yesterday and today though. Don’t really know why I didn’t just go and get another doctor’s certificate. I seem to have a horrible case of flu. Either way I am currently dosed up on antibiotics, codral, and multiple cough lozenge brands. My voice though doesn’t like me too much because I work in a call centre… whoops.
I have the next two days off which will be good… but not any kind of break.
Tomorrow I am:
- Off to pick up passports(yes that is plural)
- Buy boots for my cosplay for Supanova this weekend(Vala Mal Doran for those interested)
- Buy a smaller camera than my current one(to use at Supanova as well as a music festival in Finland)
- Return books I borrowed to a friend as well as get some back that I borrowed from a friend
- Get a haircut
- Pack more items in preparation for storage.
And Wednesday won’t be much better. I have my final language class in the evening and need to go to a friends place for a final fitting to and to collect my costume she’s made me for this Saturday.
And I found out today that my cousin in Estonia won the Junior European Rowing Championship! W00T! So excited for him!
