Tuesday has rolled around once more. The Smocust is (hopefully) flying, one state is taking the day off, etc.
Meanwhile, a bunch of people are donning bright clothing and silly hats, and heading down to watch a bunch of horses do some laps.
So, the topic for the day’s debate is: That the fashion is more important than the race at the Melbourne Cup.

Judging by the media coverage, the fashion is more important. Judging by the dollars bet on it, the gambling is the most important.
Once every seven years it falls on my birthday and so my birthday gets overshadowed by a bloody horse race. I’m over it though because these days my birthday gets overshadowed by my own lack of interest in marking the passing of yet another year.
Sounds just like my dad Harls
His birthday is 6 November so he sometimes shares his bday with cup day. He is turning 60 on Sunday and also shares your lack of interest in marking the passing of another year : )
My Auntie loved to have a flutter on the horses and always used to give me tips for the Melbourne Cup. Some of them took so long to cross the finishing line that search parties were being organised. She’d still be back next year with a ‘sure thing’.
The prodigal “l” has returned
An old man lives in a small village. He is very poor and his only property is his humble house. One day, the man hears a voice saying, “George, if you want to be rich, sell your house, rent an apartment in the city and play the rest of your money at the track.” The old man initially is very surprised, but he finally decides to do what the strange voice commands. He sells his house, and he rents an apartment in the city.
When he is ready to play all of his money at the track, the voice comes again and says, “Bet all your money on horse number seven in the fourth race.” The old man does exactly as directed, but his horse comes in last and the old man loses all of his money. “What is the meaning of this?!” cries George to the heavens. The strange voice says, “George, you know, I’ve just never been very lucky…but I sure do love to play!”
I don’t really care much about the fashion or the horse race. I mean, I do get some amusement at looking at the ridiculous outfits into which the women stuff themselves. Sometimes I wonder if they’ve even looked in a mirror before leaving the house.
It’s also fun to go in a couple of office sweeps and, once in a blue moon, I might go into the TAB with a colleague to place a very small bet but that’s it. If I *am* betting, I like to bet on the grey horses because they’re pretty.
In the grand scheme of things, I reckon it’s the horse race that comes out on top in terms of importance. Winning the Melbourne Cup for a jockey or a horse is a bit like winning an Oscar for an actor. The Cup can open up many new opportunities and vastly increase the value of the jockey, the horse, the trainer, and the owner.
Sitting on the train right now and I swear the woman opposite me has bought everything white and added her own highlighter.
Hmm. This picture disturbs me.
Perhaps she had a little early-morning confusion regarding bridle vs. bridal. Pity not scorn!
I’m going to sit on the fence.
Fashion is important to those who are interested in fashion.
Horse racing is important to those who are interested in horse racing.
We do have a “thing” happen here at work. Nothing big, we don’t dress up. We have a staff lunch, the boys have a beer or two, and we sit around talking for a few hours while lounging around in front of the t.v.
Just a relaxed day which is nice.
Well, thats pretty much covered what I want to say!
Im dressed up in the spirit of the races today and I will definitley put a bet on! I like the event. Its all a bit of fun!!!
Very wise, Bubbles. And then there are the people who are interested in both…
…not that I am naming any particular Sarah Jessica Parkers.
I am very much not dressed up for the races today – I just didn’t have the heart at 5am!!
I got up at 5am to make sure I had time to do my hair… Then it rained…
I may have had a drink or two before I left this morning.
I got a tenant in the building to help me with my hair. My dress is nothing fancy but I have a fascinator and dangly earrings on. My work hosts a fairly decent sized function though so that’s the only reason I’m even somewhat dressy. If we did nothing at work I wouldn’t bother really.
I think it’s a win for those who get the public holiday because of it! What I wouldn’t give for a day off today…
As for fashion, I don’t particularly care. If I see it, I like laughing at some of the atrocious outfits out there, but I understand it’s important to them.
For the race, we would usually have sweeps in office and then watch the race on our big screen. However I’ve heard nothing about sweeps today (so they’re either not running them or editorial has been blocked) and all the TVs in the office haven’t had signal for about six months (which HR still haven’t fixed), so today will just be a normal, crappy day.
I hope everyone else enjoys it though.
Yep!
A bit dressy. Not really bothered whether or not people dress up or not. Doesn’t do anything for me either way. And we are having a function here at work today so this morning has been a lot of set up and such. Now really just waiting for people to arrive and doing last minute stuff.
I agree with Bubbles on this one although as a non-gambler the clothes are more interesting to me generally.
In WA the cup is rather conveniently at lunch time, our company does pizza and champagne, not sure why that combination but it’s tradition.
For me it is neither, it is the day off!
At work we usually have a sweep, but I don’t know what the new firm does as I haven’t heard anything, having been on leave for the last two weeks. Sometimes we’ll watch the race on TV, and of course that will also includes highlights of Fashions on the Field, but it doesn’t bother me if I miss it. There will be plenty of replays!
I wouldn’t say that the fashion is more important, despite what the media might say. I think it’s an opportunity to dress up & have a bit of fun, although I guess the celebs take it far more seriously than the plebs in that department, judging by how they all looked compared to the general public. (Girls, girls, girls….PLEASE do not look like you’re going out clubbing on a Saturday night!)
I didn’t bother with a flutter this year. Not much of a gambler and when I do, I rarely if ever win anyway. Pretty much missed the race today due to trying to get home.
Much like me.
SheWho had day off
So I worked at the servo
No day off for me
Only time I bet
If someone says “Bet you can’t…”
And I know I can
Horse racing is meh
I’ve no fashion sense either
I like lasses though
However I saw
The same clothes I’d seen them wear
En route home from clubs
If SJ Parker
Went to race day she just might
Find herself saddled
Short-sighted jockey
May mistake her for his mount
I now duck and hide
Now here’s a horse race!
