MMM- Monday Morning Murmuring

I greet you this Monday morning, murmuring because I am either getting in very late, or getting up very early, and I am not really awake and loud noises scare a not-awake-Smoph.

But speaking of noises, I want to hear your murmurs about the weekend past (Smocust had a great one btw) and I also want to hear your thoughts on your favourite musical instrument.

I was lying in the relaxation portion of my Body Balance class, listening to the low, deep intonations of the cello in the music, and realised if I had to name one, that would be my favourite instrument (closely followed by piano, then harp).

It is the cello’s ability to add the richness in music, and also the mournful or melancholy way it sounds.

But that’s just my thoughts. What think you, Splatterati?

The piano is great, a terrific instrument and the basis of much music, but for adding richness I love the violin. Just listen to Warren Ellis playing in The Dirty Three or Grinderman to see what he can make it do. Some people can practically make it talk; Ellis could make it present a doctoral thesis.

Weekend was fairly ordinary, although it started off well with a Thai dinner. A lot of napping was involved, which should get me through the week with a bit of a luck. Got my tax in six days early which should put the ATO into deep shock. I didn’t fix the taps or the light-switch but, hey, one thing at a time. And I fixed Mrs H’s best friend’s computer.

I watched the final Sherlock last night and quite liked it. I think I shall get hold of the first two and watch them. We were supposed to be doing barefoot bowls yesterday but the rain wiped that out.

I start work at a new location today. I have been moved to a smaller pond but made into a larger frog. Should be an interesting week. There is a decent pay-rise involved so I guess it’s actually a real promotion. Anyway, after a few moths of that hopefully the accounts people at Integral etc. will no longer be on a first-name basis with me.

Splugs and ‘gratz as appropriate, hope you all have a great week.

You should listen to Nick Cave and Warren Ellis – White Lunar. Sound track to ‘The Road’, The Proposition and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Amazing.

Hi all! Had a good weekend – not long enough.

Went to the Splat dinner on Sat night. Was very excited to meet the lovely Smoph, finally met the Locust and also the gorgeous Dorothy Dix.

Was a bit shy and asked too many questions but the splatters were great and I enjoyed the food as well.

Sunday was spent studying and writing notes. Tried to buy a new tumble dryer – was successful then went to pick it up and they did not have one. Had serious discussion with staff and came home with my money. Then found the same one cheaper somewhere else.

    Anyway splugs to you all.

My favourite instrument is the guitar. There is nothing nicer than enjoying a sunset with a glass of wine and some Spanish guitar playing in the distance.

Hmm, interesting question Smoph. I love the piano for its versatility and the amazing varieties of music it can be used to create. And I love how it can shine as a solo instrument but also be perfect for accompaniment or as part of an orchestra. I love the guitar for similar reasons. However, I adore xylophones and glockenspiels and other melodic percussion instruments as well. Unlike probably 99% of Australians, I also like the recorder, when it’s played properly that is, not when you’re listening to a bunch of grade 1 kids learning to play it. I used to play my beloved tenor recorder in a recorder ensemble and we made some beautiful, beautiful music. I also used to play the timpani in a youth orchestra. But, I think my all-time favourite instrument would have to be the ukulele. So terribly underrated and such fun to play.

I remember playing the recorder in 4th grade. I sucked. Quickly learned that when there are 40 kids blowing their lungs out, nobody’s gonna notice that one kid is faking it.

    Wet blah weekend.

Tin whistle is such a great instrument. Something so basic can make such amazing sounds. It can be deep and soulful or high and dance-worthy.

But I also can’t say no to the traditional man with guitar ensemble. Particularly Spanish guitar. And Spanish man.

    Ole!

I also have a James Galway album with him playing various pieces on them. He’s a virtuoso on the tin whistle.

            He is fantastic.

When my father met my mother and was trying to impress her, he bought a whistle, put a Galway record on and pretended he could play by holding the whistle and twiddling his fingers, tricking her into thinking it was him.

Of course she fell for it, luckily :)

I subsequently learnt to play on that very whistle!

I worked all week end at the local Marina, what an office, lovely.
I’ve always loved the bass sax and thought if I ever got the time I’d learn it so now I’m thinking that can be my retirement hobby.

A single instrument. I don’t think I could pick. Having said that, any instrument played by a high quality artist can be entralling.
A string quartet playing in harmony will stop my in my tracks.
I also have an MP3 in my playlist which is a 15 minute jam session featuring Hendricks and BB King. Allegedly Eric Clapton is in there too but I’ve never found grounds to confirm or deny that. But in the sense it has these great artists just playing and enjoying every minute makes it a worthwhile experience.

Weekend was groovy, filled with sleep ins, chillaxing, computer games, season 4 of Heroes, and making my epic pizzas of uberness – nom nom nom. It was something of a shame to interrupt it with going to work this morning.

weekend a bit blah – crappy weather mkes me not motivated to do anything. Splat up dinner certainly a high point! The bucket certainly got a work out :) Then spent sunday watching my new Glee dvds

I would really really love to learnt to play the piano, so I guess that is my favourite. One of my friends is an extremly talented violinist and that is probably in my number 2 spot.

Oh yeah, the big question. I’m personally partial to the kazoo, which is one of the reasons I like the Chicken Run soundtrack so much. It has the only songs I’m aware of with a full kazoo section.

In the 80s, there was an Australian comedy musical quartet called The Cabbage Brothers. They wedre great and played a lot of 1940s and 1950s music. I was at one of their shows where they were playing ‘Temptation’ which has a great trumpet solo. Just before the solo, the trumpeter, for some reason, tossed his trumpet over his shoulder, denting it and making it completely unplayable. He shrugged and finished the number on virtuoso kazoo. It was awesome! (I saw this show several times and the trumpet-throwing was definitely not a regular gag.)

Morning or moaning all depending what side you slipped out of the doona this morning. I am an Aunty again my sister who lives in Italy gave birth to a baby girl at 3.30am this morning ( Aus time) her name is Isabella Emellia and she weighed in at just over 6lbs and all the family is doing well. Hence, why I was at work at 6am by the time everyone had a chat to me, I decided sleep was not an option.

Glad the Smocust had a great weekend, mine wasn’t to shabby either. Not that it was planned, but was instigated when an old friend walked into the office late Friday afternoon and we “went for a drink” which lasted until my arrival home at 10am Sat morning! After watching some video of my antics I decided I had better apologise to a few bar’s I frequent. Out of those apologies, I got a job offer! SO maybe I thought it was worse than it was.
Saturday night I swore I was going to be good, go out for dinner and then home- fail try 9.30am the next morning!
I do believe I thought I was still 25 or maybe I tried to make up for missing such late nights/ early mornings, which I rarely had when I was 25! Sunday was spent very quietly, finding my car, which I managed to misplace on Friday, (Notice I said misplaced not lost) having a run to de-hangover myself and finally lazing by the pool watching box office movies on Fox. Lastly I dropped my friend back at the airport so he could fly to work, he is an industrial abseiler ( not a job for the faint hearted). I took his mum along to wave bye, as it was her he had flown in to see as a surprise for her Birthday, she is a fantastic lady and in keeping in line with the tone of the blog a piano teacher. She has a baby grand in her music room but her instrument of desire is the Harp, which she has, and plays. She was involved with the MSO until her retirement a few years ago.

Today I was in the office early 6am and have done a stack of my to do pile which has been awaiting my perusal very patiently. I can’t wait to see pics of my new niece, and I am blessed that my sis and her hubbie chose to add a little bit of me in there by using my name as a middle name. Although it is quite a mouthful, but Italians talk with their hands anyway! ( bad joke)
Ok Splatters, I am away to listen to a couple of presentation rehearsals by staff , prior to the real deals. Then we are hosting an office Pink breakfast, which is really morning tea!

Acoustic Guitar would have to be my favourite, but the Piano and Violin are also favourites of mine.

I’m still absolutely floored by the blatant rudeness of some people.

Coming out of the train station this morning I was simple astounded by the women in front of me going through the gates.

She went through the gate and her ticket was held by the machine, I put in my ticket and started to walk through. My little ticket popped up and as I was reaching for it she turned around and snatched it away from me.

She said “oh is that mine?!”, I said ” No sorry, that’s my ticket, yours got eaten” (I’m real technical aren’t I?)

I reached my hand out to receive my ticket back, all she did was look at me, gave a little huff and puff and threw my ticket on the ground and walked away.

I need that ticket to get home lady!

    What.the.f**k.?

How rude! Commuters are not really people however.

It is like the whole werewolf / full moon idea.

Between 06.00 – 09.10 and 16.45 – 18.30, the inner commuter comes out of otherwise perfectly normal individuals and really is an obnoxious beast. It thrives on the blood and tears of polite people. Its favourite activity is joining with other commuters to form a “Commuter River” which floods towards Destination Station and refuses to allow anyone to walk “upstream”.

I can add to that, early morning or late evening flights from or to either Melb / Syd. These can turn the nicest most professional people into roaring lunatics with no manners or self worth. Then there are those people who rush to get off the plane who basically knock you over in their haste. I find a well placed heel works wonders!

Ah, now I know why so many women wear stilettos on plane trips. I always thought they were crazy, but now I can see that a particularly pointy heel can occasionally be the most appropriate response to a pushy neighbour. I’ll keep this in mind :P

The instrument, I play and own a Cello. Reason being I was to frightened of the recorder teacher back in grade 3 to learn it, so popped my hand up for Cello. I don’t play as often as I should, as the Cello lives in Sydney and I in Melbourne. The other thing however I am greatful for in learning to play was that I learn’t to read music!

Instrument – very hard to choose, I appreciate the unique qualities of all of them. I play keyboards/organ myself, so get to emulate all instruments, but while that is fun, I will have to admit it is only emulate, it doesn’t come anywhere near the tonality & expression of the real instruments.
I have a soft spot for harp, especially as played by Hilary Stagg, but would have to say my favourite is not one instrument but four, the classic string quartet.

Weekend – went bed shopping on Saturday – a comical experience, especially when you & the stranger on the next bed both get up at the same time and have to decide who goes first to stand up!
Sunday – discovered lovely Tattersalls prize payment emails, which had me one number away from resigning. Very happy, 4 small prizes in total will pay for the new bed, but still only Divs 3 & 4. *sigh* only one number away from the big one…
Otherwise a mixture of being very productive – clothes washing & ironing, weeding, washing & vacuuming car – and also being very lazy – sleeping in, playing PC games, watching TV – including Sherlock Holmes, Harlequin, and yes it is worth watching the first 2.

My weekend was pretty good, for the most part. My mate came down from the country which was great, and I had a BBQ with a few friends. It was pink themed and I asked them all donate to Breast Cancer research as a variation to a Girls Night In (except that mine included guys, because I realised I don’t have that many female friends…).

Anyway, I enjoyed the dressing up in gorgeous pink things, and did have fun. My country mate and Mr Almost got on a little too well for my liking, and I struggled a bit to control my jealousy. It was all innocent flirting, because she’s already taken, but nevertheless, the green eyed monster was certainly present in me. And what was worse, Mr Almost knew it, and seemed to find some sadistic pleasure in it. And that of course caused me to retaliate by flirting with his roommate, though that wasn’t so different to our normal behaviour anyway. I’m ashamed of exactly how satisfying it was to see the flicker of jealousy in his eyes too. Why do we always hurt the people we love? Seems my relationship with Mr Almost is a little more complicated than I’d hoped. But I’ll get over it, I’m sure!

Anyway, last week of work before holidays, and I have a mountain of stuff to finish, and absolutely no motivation to do it, so that’s going well. I’m also meeting Mr Maybe tonight for drinks, so we’ll see if things get any better there.

As for instruments, I have a soft spot for the flute, because I’ve been playing it since I was about 10. I have no natural talent, and I never practiced very hard, but after 14 years of playing, I’m competent at simple pieces, and I’ve got a wide array of sheet music from movies that I always enjoy playing (Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Sound of Music, etc).

The one instrument I’d like to learn to play is the piano though. I keep telling myself I’ll learn one day… When I have the time…

Glad to hear the Splat Up went well. Hope you’re all looking forward to a fantabulous week.

Groundhog Day was on television on Friday night.

If Bill Murray can take the time to learn how to play the piano then anyone can :) I’ve been meaning to get lessons myself and I think Groundhog Day tipped me over the edge.

I understand he was experiencing the same day over and over (and over) again, but surely it is still achievable without supernatural intervention?

      Go for it :)

I’ve tried to plan it before. To be honest though, I’d love to learn in a group setting, because I’m looking for hobbies where I can meet new people, but I haven’t really found any group piano lessons.

I’ll just learn to play one or two particularly spectacular sounding pieces on the piano, and that should be all I need :P

My favourite instrument is probably the piano, I don’t listen to a lot of instrumental pieces but when I do (and I enjoy it) it tends to include a fair amount of piano.

As for the weekend, it was really good

Op-shopping on Saturday was successful my friend found the perfect pink “prom” dress for the halloween party next weekend, followed by fish and chips in Freo and ice cream at Hillary’s on the way home. Sunday was a nice lazy day, not much got done except a bit of vacuuming, the day finished with dinner at the local pub with friends (Beef and Guinness pie with garlic and bacon mash = yum).

    Good morning all!

Totally get where you’re all coming from with the instruments. Pokey, totally agree with you about music genre flexibility with the piano. But I love those tinkling harp notes!

So, as stated Al and I had a great weekend. We went to Canberra Friday and stopped at Dog on the Tuckerbox, which was happy and sad for me because I wanted to stop there, but it reminds me of our family dog who was put down last year. I also met Al’s brother, which was terrifying but actually quite alright. :) And randomly ran into an ex-housemate from BrisVegas randomly in Canberra city mall. Weird! Also think I might have weirded Al’s brother out going up and randomly kissing and hugging an apparent stranger.

Saturday we got out to see my cousin, his wife and his teenage (read: monster-sized) boys who were tiny last I saw them. That was nice, and they offered us the sofa bed if we want to come and stay again. :) That was also the first of my family Al has met, so it was good (read: the best or worst, depending on how you look at it, is yet to come! :P ). Did some sightseeing at Telstra Tower, nipped into the National museum and went on a multimedia thing that made me sick. Had some ordinary sushi train and a nap in the afternoon before meeting the Canberra Splatters.

Personally, I had a ball at dinner. Company was fantastic, food was pretty nommy and the bucket got a good work-out. :P Dorothy is lovely and cute as a button, Seer is funny as (and a brunette, which Al guessed, how I don’t know) and Mr Seer is a barrel of fun too. We missed Kanga very much, but when the ‘pacas need their mum, they need her!

Sunday had a delicious coffee breakfast with some food at Cafe Essen – highly recommended for coffee. And up to Mount Ainslie for some lovely views. We headed back to Albury then went to Les Mis 25th anniversary spectacular showing at the cinema. I actually hadn’t seen the whole score and I wept like a baby. Doubly, I must go and see it soon or I will spontaneously combust. But there’s no dates listed for an Aussie tour. Very sadface. And not any of the places in the US that I would go next year at the time I would go. Extra sadface.

Anyways, I’m spacey as I drove back this morning, so hope you all have a better and slightly less caffienated day than me!

    Morning all!

My favourite instrument would have to be piano or acoustic guitar I think. I do love strings however as well and the cello is such a versatile instrument two of my favourite bands/groups to simply listen to would have to be Bond and Apocalyptica.

My weekend was good. The aborted and rescheduled from last weekend whale watching occured on Saturday. Fantastic weather if a tad windy when we left Circular Quay. We saw a few whales including a mother and a her calf. We also got to watch the clouds roll in from 3 directions to hit Sydney for a massive storm which we got caught in coming back in to Circular Quay. Some lucky people managed to find shelter inside the wheelhouse and I was one of them. Others not so lucky and got absolutely drenched due to the minimal cover around the wheelhouse. Still a great day though and I think it’s been a while since I’ve smiled that much. Being on boats just makes me happy.

Sunday went to my friends place for a while to hang out and watched How To Train A Dragon. I missed it at the cinema which I regret now after having seen it on DVD.

Saturday night was the end of season dinner for my friend Randy and his 2020VisionQuest team. Did you know they expect the number of blind people to skyrocket by 2020? Mostly due to macular degeneration as the “baby boomers” reach the age where it tends to hit.

I saw videos of my friends holding out their hands with breadcrumbs in their palms and Grey Jays would just land on their hands during their hikes.

Random question for anyone in the peanut gallery who’d like to take a stab at it:

Anyone know anything useful about investment properties, or somewhere I can look where they won’t try to flog me a seminar?

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

    • Lolita

When I started my property folio I sought advice from my Financial planner and accountant so my advice is as follows.

If you have a financial advisor speak to them, alternatively speak to your Tax accountant. A seminar is a no no! They are really designed to make $$ for the company holding the seminar. You would be better to spend the dollars on getting an non biased opinion on investing from an independant advisor who looks at Your income, and takes into account your lifestyle etc, and can give you advice relevant to you. Not the gravy advice you get from a seminar!

Lolita gives you good advice (so says a tax accountant!). I will go one step further, and depending on your aspirations (1 or 2 properties, most tax accountants will be fine), you may wish to seek out one who specialises in property investors, or who personally has investment properties.
There are also some good books written by Australians for the Aussie market, that will explain terminology, strategies and why they are done etc, so it depends on what you want to know. Go to a good big bookstore, like Borders, that has lots of choice, and look at the blurbs for the ones that sound logical, reasonable and no-BS, and run a mile from the ones that promise to make you a millionaire in a year.
Also, there are a few forums out there relating the property investing, they are good for getting answers, recommendations of property professionals etc.

    Afternoon everyone!

Such a beautiful day here in Adelaide, just come back from lunch spent sitting outside :) So nice to get some sunshine during the day.

My weekend was fair to middling. Stayed home friday night whilst the boy went to a party for some of his friends, and laughed at him lots when he was super hungover on Saturday morning!

I went wedding dress shopping with my friend, no “that’s the one!” moments for her, but she’s ging to Sydney this weekend to see a dressmaker about a specific dress, so hopefully that will work out, otherwise I think it’s going to be tricky!

Then got a horrible headache on Saturday night so went to bed early and then spent half of Sunday sitting very still trying not to move my head too much. Sent the boy out for good painkillers which helped a great deal. Then dinner at Mum and Dad’s so I could do my tax on their computer, should be getting nearly $600 back, yay! Less yay is the fact that really it should just go on my credit card :(

Not much planned for the week ahead, except for continual practice of the songs for my vocal group, only 3 more rehearsals before our concert, eek!!

Someone’s accusing me of joining silly groups on Facebook.

Oddly enough though, they were fairly close to the mark about my weekend.

    Afternoon all!

I have spent the morning doing laundry and sewing 5 fairyfloss-pink skirts for a performance on Saturday night.

The weekend was pretty good, although it contained too much procrastination due to the sunshine

I love all instruments and play piano. I’m teaching myself uklele at the moment but want to learn so many more. I went to a party on Saturday night and the girl had just bought a new harp. She played some songs and it was just wonderful.

I’m also keen to try the violin, flute, harmonica and clarinet.

    Things that make me happy:
    - Sunshine
    - Getting sewing finished
    - Peanut butter
    - my new quilt cover

    I just got dumped!

    Funnily enough, I wasn’t aware I was in a relationship? :P

Mr Maybe has apparently decided he’d like to be Mr Maybe Not. Despite being apparently distraught that we couldn’t catch up last week, and then being excited this morning when we agreed to catch up tonight, it seems that by this afternoon he’d had a change of heart, and so he ended it…

I really can’t stop laughing. I mean, he’s a nice guy, we had a couple of dates. But since when did that equal a relationship?

Oh, how shall I ever recover?! I am wounded, I tell you! I shall now survive on chocolate for the next month, like a good little dumpee. :P I may go into a decline. I haven’t decided yet. Does a decline mean I get to buy new shoes?

Ok, I’ll admit my pride was a tiny bit wounded… It was nice to have an admirer. :P But honestly, they call women overly dramatic? Two meetings does not a relationship make!

      • Definitely not. :P
As for chocolate, yes, yes, definitely yes. :)

Guys can set the benchmark in being messed up. Being messed up is equal opportunity.
The impression from your previous posts was that he was shy and nervous, which is a spectacular combination for male stoopidness.

Glad you can laugh it off. And yes I think new shoes are completely justified.

Well to be honest, I’d felt a little bit guilty going out with him when my head was still fairly screwed up with Mr Almost, though ironically I’d told myself that it was nothing serious at this stage, so it wasn’t a problem. I think it’s for the best, though as I said, my pride’s a bit hurt. I got dumped without the fun of being in the relationship first :P

When my bank calls to ask why my credit card is over the limit, I’ll inform them that you said I could buy shoes. I’m sure they’ll understand :P

Go forth and buy shoes, eat chocolate and laugh about this for many moons with best g/f’s. Us girls don’t need a reason to buy shoes or eat choc, BUT that was to funny, so celebrate the occasion by doing so……

Sorry im not good with the disguising the link thing. She will be coming home with us on friday and we cant wait.

As for instruments, i played the flute for a long time as a child, gave it up when i was about 15 i think which i regret now. It has the most beautiful sound when played well, i also love the piano, but cant play unfortunately.

    Have a great week everyone!

    Good evening peeps!

My fave musical instrument…hmmm…I’d have to go (in no particular order) guitars of any kind, piano & strings of any kind. I’m a sucker for string sections in music, just makes everything sound instantly beautiful, or more beautiful as the case may be.

Weekend was meh. My grandfather’s now been moved to the cardio ward as they’ve discovered he has a dodgy heart (thanks H for your best wishes too). He’s gotta go on meds for it, but they’re putting him under tomorrow to do some test or something that involves shutting down and then jump-starting his heart – apparently it’s beating irregularly too.

    Have a great week everyone!
